"the goal in Wicca is not to do simplistic spell casting, and it's certainly not to believe that God is out there somewhere. The spiritual focus of Wicca is to feel, to experience, and to know the Divine and the ecstasy of communion with that divinity."
~Phyllis Curott, Withcrafting
I have been spiritually dead for a long time. I had burned out from my study of religions and felt that no matter where I turned the answers were the same, man made off of blind faith. Well, I know that is not how I wanted to live, another sheep ready to follow anything or anyone to the slaughter house for a little bit of feed. For a while I felt there was no God/Goddess or higher power that existed. I became deeply interested in astronomy and still am. This led me slightly down the road to total atheism. But since I've been learning about energy in the universe, such as particles, light, protons, etc. I do have this new found sense of power that exists. I refrain from calling it a supernatural power, because for all we know this is a power/energy that is intrinsic to everyone, it is natural and we just haven't learned to tap into that power, for some of us as individuals and for everyone as a whole.
I love the quote above by Phyllis Curott, because she sums it up for me very eloquently. It's not the glitz and glamor of spell casting. Yeah, it looks and sounds cool, but is that what lasts in the end? I strongly doubt this. It's not tying oneself down to a God or even believing that a possible God exists. This gives one the illusion of unchangeable safety. For me it is highly unlikely to live in a static, permanent state of life. The sky alone lets us know that things are moving, changing, and are impermanent. Even our own North Star is not entirely static. Give it enough time and it will no longer be our constant North Star that guides us. A question or thought I often like to ask is, why? Why would we want to live in a stationary world? Many things can grow stale and boring in one spot, I think it is better to have the room and freedom to breathe change.
The concept of Wicca I suppose is to feel one's place in this vast universe and to learn to communicate within it's many wondrous and different parts. The Sacred is something worthy of our respect, dedication, time, and energy. Therefore, we find different ways to communicate with what it is we so cherish. Most of us just want to belong, to feel we have a place and home in this universe. Experiencing the Sacred Divine through Wicca is only one way in the many faceted diamond. So although, I may not know if there is a God, I do know I am a part of this universe and no denying it will change that or separate me from what is.
